The future of livestock farming is connected, intelligent, and data-driven. Across Africa, agricultural organizations, ranch operators, cooperatives, and livestock owners are increasingly adopting Industrial IoT technologies to improve herd visibility, reduce operational losses, and modernize livestock management practices.
At Afrikanet, we recently delivered an advanced Livestock IoT Communication Gateway solution to the Littoral region of Cameroon — a rugged, enterprise-grade platform designed to support real-time monitoring of cattle and other livestock through smart GPS collar infrastructure.
Industrial IoT Built for Smart Agriculture
The solution is based on the Elastel EG324 Industrial IoT Gateway, a powerful industrial communication platform engineered for reliable field deployment in demanding agricultural environments.
Powered by a high-performance Arm Cortex-A9 quad-core processor running at 1.4 GHz, the gateway combines industrial reliability with edge-computing capability. With 512MB RAM, 8GB eMMC storage, Ubuntu OS, and built-in Node-RED support, the device enables intelligent data collection, automation, and cloud integration directly at the network edge.
The gateway includes:
- 4 isolated RS485/RS232 serial interfaces for industrial data acquisition
- Dual 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports for reliable network connectivity
- LPWAN communication support including LoRa-based livestock collar integration
- Cloud and local server connectivity
- Remote monitoring and device management capabilities
This infrastructure allows livestock operators to manage hundreds of connected GPS collars simultaneously while maintaining stable long-range communication across open grazing environments.
Real-Time Visibility for Modern Herd Management
Traditional livestock management often relies on manual monitoring, which can be time-consuming, inefficient, and vulnerable to animal loss or delayed health detection.
With the Livestock IoT Gateway solution, farmers and organizations gain access to real-time operational intelligence.
The system enables:
- Live location tracking of cattle, goats, and sheep
- Activity monitoring and behavioral analysis
- Detection of anomalies such as immobility or animals leaving designated areas
- Automated data transmission to cloud or local monitoring systems
- Intelligent herd management and digital agriculture integration
The gateway supports communication ranges of approximately 300–500 meters in open-field conditions and can handle between 250 and 500 connected collars depending on deployment requirements.
This level of visibility helps operators improve grazing management, reduce theft and livestock loss, optimize resource allocation, and strengthen animal health monitoring programs.
Designed for Rural and Intensive Agricultural Environments
Agricultural deployments require equipment that performs reliably in harsh outdoor conditions. The gateway is therefore designed with industrial durability as a core requirement.
Its IP65–IP66 ruggedized enclosure provides protection against dust, moisture, and demanding rural environments. The system supports PoE (Power over Ethernet), enabling simplified installation using a single cable for both power and data transmission.
Additional deployment advantages include:
- Low power consumption
- Wall or pole mounting support
- OTA (Over-The-Air) firmware updates
- Connectivity diagnostics and monitoring
- Overvoltage protection
- Long operational lifespan in agricultural environments
For optimal performance, the gateway is typically installed in elevated central herd locations with stable network access and open-area wireless coverage.
